What is the Furniture Station?
The Furniture Station is a registered charity No. 1097219 and a Company Limited by Guarantee No. 4680660.
As a partnership between Hazel Grove Baptist Church, Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and Stockport Homes; The Furniture Station is a unique, anti-poverty initiative in Stockport that supplies donated, good-quality furniture, household and electrical items for a nominal delivery fee, to individuals and families in need, living in the Borough of Stockport. It was launched in 1994 and has successfully developed over the last 18 years to achieve its vision of supporting people in need in Stockport.
The Furniture Station helps assist families within our community to establish tenancy and prevent homelessness. We aim to turn their accommodation into a home, allowing them the opportunity to establish a more stable, healthy and independent lifestyle.
We also aim to:
Provide training opportunities and work placements
Help to reduce environmental pollution by collecting and re-using items that might otherwise have ended up in landfill.
Encourage the general public to donate unwanted household items, ensuring they help both their neighbours and the environment.
Treat everyone fairly and equally, without bias or preconceived ideas.
Furniture is collected free of charge, renovated & repaired as necessary through our volunteer workshop. All electrical items are tested, repaired as required and fitted by the Service Engineer.
Clients include homeless people going into accommodation including refugees, elderly people, lone parents and young people; basically all those who cannot afford to buy items they need to make a home.
Each year The Furniture Station makes approximately 2000 collections and 1000 deliveries; delivers around 4000 items of furniture and electrical items and helps over 1000 families and individuals in the Borough of Stockport each year.
With only 5 members of staff, most of the work is done by 20 volunteers who come from Hazel Grove Baptist Church, specialist agencies and the wider community and contribute to over 3000 hours each year. Up to 14 work placements can be provided each year also which allows high volumes of activity to be achieved.
To ensure that the people we are working with are those most in need, all clients are referred to us from recognized referral agents, such as Women’s Refuge, Social Workers, Housing Resettlement teams and Health Workers.
The project is part funded by main partners Hazel Grove Baptist Church, Stockport Council and Stockport Homes. The remaining costs of the project have to be met by donations from individuals, Charitable Trusts, the Business Sector and through fundraising events.
If you would like to donate unwanted, good-quality furniture, telephone 0161 456 0717 or visit www.furniturestation.org.uk for information on what can be accepted and use our online collection form.
The office is staffed from 9.00am to 12.00pm Monday to Thursday; there is an answerphone at other times.
Arrangements will be made for collection usually within a week depending on the area. All upholstered furnishings must comply with the Furniture and Fire (Safety) Regulations 1988 and display this on the upholstered furnishings. Please note we do not accept gas appliances.
