Role Description

The Assistant or Associate Minister will play a full and active role in the life and leadership of the church, working closely with the Senior Minister and Leadership Team.

This is a broad and varied role, combining general ministry responsibilities with specific oversight of youth and young adult ministries.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Sharing in the preaching and teaching ministry (typically around once per month)
  • Providing leadership, vision and oversight to youth and young adult ministries
  • Discipling and mentoring individuals, particularly among younger members of the church
  • Identifying, developing and supporting volunteer leaders
  • Contributing to the overall vision, strategy and direction of the church
  • Supporting pastoral care across the wider church family
  • Engaging actively in outreach, evangelism and mission initiatives
  • Participating fully in the wider life and rhythms of the church

We are particularly looking for someone who sees their role as an enabler of ministry, helping others to grow, lead and flourish.

Person Specification

Essential

  • A committed and mature Christian with a strong, active faith and a clear personal commitment to Jesus Christ.
  • In full agreement with, and able to subscribe to, the HGBC Statement of Faith.
  • A person of prayer, Godly character and biblical conviction, demonstrating the qualities expected of church leadership.
  • Educated to degree level in Theology, Biblical Studies, Ministry, or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in local church ministry, including leadership, discipleship and pastoral responsibility.
  • Proven ability to teach and communicate the Bible effectively in a variety of settings.
  • Experience of leading, discipling and developing young people and young adults.
  • Ability to identify, train, support and release volunteer leaders into ministry.
  • Strong interpersonal, pastoral and team-working skills.
  • A heart for evangelism, mission and church growth.

Desirable

  • Formal ministerial training or recognised ministry accreditation.
  • Experience within an Evangelical and/or Baptist church context.
  • Experience of strategic leadership and ministry planning.
  • Experience of safeguarding leadership and best practice within a church setting.

Additional Requirements

  • The appointment is subject to satisfactory references and the right to work in the UK.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check and adhere to the church's safeguarding policies and procedures, reflecting the role's work with children, young people and vulnerable adults.
  • The post holder must actively support and work in accordance with the vision, values and doctrinal basis of HGBC.
  • As this role involves promoting, teaching and representing the Christian faith, there is a Genuine Occupational Requirement for the post holder to be a practising Christian under Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010
